Diesel engines offer greater thermodynamic efficiency, leading to improved fuel economy. This is especially evident when operating at part load, since their air supply is not throttled like in petrol engines, allowing diesel engines to maintain a high level of efficiency.

20% to 40% better fuel economy achieved by modern diesel-engined automobiles offsets the higher per-litre emissions of greenhouse gases, and a diesel-powered vehicle emits 10–20 percent less greenhouse gas than comparable gasoline vehicles.

Special low-temperature diesel contains additives to keep it liquid at lower temperatures, but starting a diesel engine in very cold weather may still pose considerable difficulties.
